Custom Portrait Painted on a T-Shirt: How It Works

Custom Portrait Painted on a T-Shirt: How It Works

A custom portrait painted on a t-shirt starts with one photo. You send it, an Indian artisan paints your face, your partner or your family by hand on the fabric, and each piece is made after you order. It is painted, not printed, so no two shirts are identical. At JusTrendy this is called “Your Story”.

What you actually get

When you order a custom portrait, the artwork is not placed by a machine. An artisan studies your photograph and paints it with brush strokes directly on the garment. That means the shirt carries small, human variations in line, shade and texture, which is exactly what makes it personal. If you want to understand the difference in detail, our guide to hand painted vs printed fabric explains how to tell them apart.

Because every piece is made to order, it is worth thinking about the gift well before the date. We do not quote delivery times here; please check the shipping and delivery policy and write to us if you have a special occasion in mind.

How to order a painted portrait, step by step

  1. Choose the garment. Start from the shop. For men there are T-shirts, shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts; women can pick kurtis, dresses or jackets. Couples can also choose matching pieces.
  2. Pick your style. Portraits can be a single face, a couple, or a family. You can also ask about line-art or quote-and-typography touches as part of the story.
  3. Send your photo. Upload it with your order or share it as asked on the product page.
  4. Check the details. Confirm size using the size guide, and re-read your photo choice. A clear picture makes a real difference.
  5. Place the order. Pay online or choose Cash on Delivery, which is available across India. Shipping is free above ₹999.
  6. Wait for the artisan to paint it. Painting begins after the order, since nothing is kept ready in stock.

How to choose a photo that paints well

This is where most people can improve their result. A painter works from the picture you give, so a poor photo limits the portrait.

  • Natural daylight. Face the window, not the lamp. Harsh flash flattens the face.
  • Face clearly visible. Eyes open, no heavy shadow, no sunglasses or hats covering features.
  • High resolution. Send the original from your phone, not a screenshot or a photo forwarded on WhatsApp, which gets compressed.
  • Plain background. It keeps the focus on the person and makes the artwork cleaner.
  • Keep it simple for couples. A photo where both faces are close and look in a similar direction paints more naturally than a wide shot.
  • One expression you love. A natural smile usually looks better than a stiff pose, since the painting will freeze it.

Ideas for who it is for

Occasion Idea
Anniversary A couple portrait on matching pieces, one for each of you. Look at our couple sets.
Birthday The person’s own face in line-art style on a T-shirt or hoodie.
Durga Puja A family portrait or a Maa Durga theme, in the spirit of our Kolkata and Bengali art.
Wedding Gift the couple a portrait painted from their engagement photo.
Remembering someone A portrait of a loved one, painted with care from a treasured photograph.

Is it worth the price?

Each product on the site shows the price of the base garment and the artisan’s hand-painting price as two separate figures. We do this because the craft deserves to be seen and paid for fairly. A painted piece will cost more than a printed T-shirt, since someone spends real time and skill on it. In my view it is a good choice when the gift is meant to be kept, not for a bulk order of identical shirts. If you want ready-made designs first, browse our stories to see the themes our artisans paint.

Caring for a hand-painted T-shirt

General care for hand-painted fabric is gentle. Wash by hand or on a delicate cycle, turn the shirt inside out, avoid harsh detergents and hard scrubbing over the painted area, and dry in shade. Iron on the reverse side. For longer guidance on the same principles, see our hand painted saree guide, which covers how to wash and store painted fabric.

Things to know before you order

  • Because it is made to order and personal, check the returns, exchange and refund policy first.
  • A painting can look slightly different from your photo. It is an artist’s interpretation, not a copy.
  • Send only photos you have the right to use and that you are comfortable sharing.
  • Questions before ordering? The FAQ and contact page are the quickest way to reach us.

A word on timing and gifting

Hand-painted work cannot be rushed, so order early for festivals, birthdays or anniversaries. If you are gifting to someone else, ask them about their size before ordering, and choose a photo they like of themselves, not just one you like. When in doubt, write to us through the contact page with the date you need it by and we will tell you what is possible.

A custom portrait works best as a keepsake: something that shows the thought behind the gift. A shirt carrying a favourite memory, painted slowly by hand, tends to be worn and talked about for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the portrait painted or printed on the T-shirt?

It is painted by hand by an Indian artisan after you order. We do not use prints or stencils, so no two pieces are identical.

What photo should I send for a custom portrait?

A clear, high-resolution photo taken in natural light with the face fully visible. Send the original file from your phone, not a compressed forwarded copy.

Can I get a couple portrait painted?

Yes. Couple and portrait designs are part of our Your Story range, and couple sets are available for sneakers too.

Can I pay by Cash on Delivery?

Yes, Cash on Delivery is available across India, and shipping is free on orders above ₹999.

Will the painting look exactly like my photo?

It will follow your photo closely, but as a hand-painted piece it carries the artisan's touch, so small differences are natural.
